Earlier this month Senior Business Development Manager Ian Sharp, delivered a speech titled “Maeving swappable battery project”. The presentation was based on the work we did with Maeving in developing an electric motorbike battery pack that could increase performance in countries with a hotter climate. Ian delivered his presentation to automotive industry experts, at the Niche Vehicle Networks (NVN) annual symposium held at the British Motor Museum in Warwick.
During his speech, Ian outlined the process we undertook to design and manufacture the custom battery pack for Maeving’s latest electric motorbike. Maeving required a rework of their current pack design for their new motorbike, aiming to enhance thermal properties to prevent overheating and support sales in hotter climates. Achieving UL2271 certification was essential for the battery pack, as all batteries must meet this requirement for battery-powered applications to be sold in the U.S. This objective was a primary focus in the initial project discussions. Our expert design engineers refined the battery pack to achieve a 13°C reduction in cell temperatures, extend the range by 7%, and deliver a higher discharge current rate across more of the charge range, resulting in enhanced performance and efficiency.
Ian’s speech contained a brief outline of our journey into automotive battery pack manufacturing from starting in medical battery pack manufacturing and then progressing into a variety of industries such as; robotics, industrial power tools, aerospace and now e-mobility. Manufacturing batteries for the automotive industry introduced new opportunities for our design and manufacturing teams, especially with the larger pack size and unique requirements of the Maeving pack. The automation required to produce larger packs to a consistently high quality as well as the support from the NVN provided us financial justification to invest in a brand new state-of-the-art automated laser system – the IPG laser welder.
After delivering the speech Ian was able to network with guests, a large majority were based in the automotive industry, to discuss future projects they had in development. Ian was able to get a good understanding of the niche vehicle market with many visitors enquiring about our capabilities following Ian’s presentation.
