The term “21700 battery” refers to any pack that consists of 21700 cells. A 21700 cell refers to its size dimensions, these being a diameter of 21mm and a length of 70mm. The need for the 21700 cell was first identified when the most common cell at the time, the 18650, didn’t have the energy density to efficiently power applications with high discharge requirements. Since its introduction, the cell has been widely adopted and is the preferred cell in battery packs for EVs, power tools, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.
The answer depends on a number of factors that will be unique to your project. Our engineering team will look at the project and assess whether the power demands and thermal management requirements best warrant the use of 21700 cells. These factors will be taken into account, along with the pricing, availability and end-user application of the cells, to come to a final decision. We present our customers with a project proposal which details the choices we have made along with reasoning.
