Earlier this month, we welcomed Mark Denten and Jonny Coates from BBC Look North to our site to cover the story of ABT designing and manufacturing custom battery packs for a flying race car from our UK manufacturing HQ. The piece featured a behind-the-scenes look at the production process involved in the production of EVTOL battery packs for the OEM behind the application, Jetson.
As part of the piece, our CEO, Mark Rutherford, was interviewed to give insight into the project’s development and some of the critical aspects the pack design needed to meet to fulfil Jetson’s requirements. Mark Denten also interviewed our Production Engineers Apprentices Harvey Baldwin and Ellie Filip, who were both excited to be working on a project as complex as this. The story was run in both the lunchtime and evening broadcasts on BBC Look North on Tuesday 18th of February with BBC Radio Newcastle discussing the piece on their evening broadcast that day. We have placed the entire BBC story below for you to watch.
Powering the future of EVTOL
The project required designing and manufacturing an innovative, lightweight, high-energy-density battery solution. The Jetson is also designed with a hot-swappable battery system, allowing its eight lithium-ion battery packs to be quickly plugged in and out, minimising downtime for maximum efficiency.
The EVTOL project required an innovative battery solution to be designed and manufactured due to the unique requirements of the end-of-line application. Keeping the design of the battery pack ultra lightweight whilst ensuring the pack had significant power to take off was a crucial aspect of the design stage. The final application operates on a hot-swappable battery system, another element we needed to work towards so the application could spend as much time as possible in the air.
The complex nature of this project allowed us to show our UK-based battery pack manufacturing facility. With the EVTOL market’s rapid expansion, this is a fantastic project to be involved in. If you require a custom battery solution for any e-mobility application, we would love for you to reach out to us.
